Where Our Data Comes From

Momentary Lab aggregates data from multiple authoritative, publicly available sources to build comprehensive healthcare provider profiles:

  • Provider information: The NPI Registry (NPPES), maintained by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), provides verified provider credentials, specialties, and practice locations.
  • Cost estimates: Negotiated rates disclosed under the Transparency in Coverage Act (effective July 2022), which requires health insurers to publicly release their negotiated rates with healthcare providers. We scrape and process billions of rate records from major insurers to compute per-provider and per-specialty cost estimates.
  • Patient reviews: Aggregated from publicly accessible review platforms including Healthgrades, Vitals, WebMD, and other sources. Review data is extracted and summarized to provide an overview of patient experiences.

For a detailed technical explanation of our data methodology, see our About Our Data page.

How We Use AI

AI assists in summarizing publicly available information about healthcare providers. Specifically:

  • Provider summaries are generated using AI based on verified data from the NPI Registry, cost filings, and review platforms. These summaries describe factual information such as specialty, location, years of experience, and patient feedback themes.
  • Cost data and provider credentials are sourced directly from government databases and payer filings, not generated by AI. Cost figures represent actual negotiated rates between providers and insurers.
  • FAQs are compiled using AI from publicly available medical information and data in our system. They provide general guidance and are not a substitute for professional medical advice.

How We Keep Data Current

  • Provider data is refreshed from the NPI Registry on a quarterly basis to capture new providers, updated specialties, and address changes.
  • Cost data is updated as new Transparency in Coverage Act filings become available, typically quarterly.
  • Review data is periodically refreshed to reflect new patient feedback.
  • Each provider profile displays a “Profile last updated” date indicating when data was last substantively refreshed. We do not update this date for cosmetic changes.
